The via corda of Saint Martin, also known as the via corda of the Virgin Mary

Welcome to one of the most aesthetically pleasing itineraries in the Vercors. If you're looking for a wilder alternative to the classic via ferrata, or a complementary experience to canyoning in the region, the Via Corda de Saint Martin (also known as Via Corda de la Vierge) is the perfect choice. Situated in the heart of the massif, this outing offers total immersion in verticality, with breathtaking views over the grandiose Vercors landscapes.

This adventure begins on the magnificent Rocher de la Vierge. Visible from the valley, this aérien itinerary lets you take in the whole of the Vercors Drômois, from the plateau de saint Martin, to the cliffs of Presles to the deep Gorges de la Bourne. It's an invitation to soar high above the idyllic villages of Saint-Martin and Saint-Julien, for an unforgettable day in the heart of nature.

An ideal introduction to mountaineering

This route is much more than just a walk: it's a real mountain school. It's the perfect opportunity to learn the techniques of wall climbing or to brush up on the basics. Here, there's no permanent "lifeline" like in traditional via ferrata or treetop adventure courses. You move with a "stretched rope," connected to your guide and companions, rediscovering the very essence of mountaineering. This authentic approach prepares you mentally and technically for even more ambitious climbs later on.

Obstacles and Highlights

The Via Corda de Saint Martin is distinguished by its aérien character and breathtaking scenery. The route skirts around and climbs the Rocher de la Vierge, offering a succession of ledges, jumps and exposed traverses that will delight those who love heights.

Climbing and Roped Climbing: The heart of the activity lies in roped progression. You'll learn to trust your feet and the rope, for a unique feeling of freedom.

Exceptional panoramas: At each belay, the view opens out onto the Font d'Urle alpine pastures and the Vercors ridges. This is one of the finest viewpoints in the region.

Abseils (Optional): For those who want to spice up the adventure, the course offers the opportunity to taste the flavor of beautiful vertical rappels. Note that the base price is often offered "without rappels," allowing for a smoother progression for those who prefer to focus on the climbing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need climbing experience to take part?

No, no previous climbing experience is strictly necessary, but good physical condition is a must. The route is described as "sporty" because it lasts all day and requires a certain degree of vertical ease. It's an excellent gateway for motivated beginners wishing to discover mountaineering.

What's the difference between this Via Corda and a classic Via Ferrata?

In Via Ferrata, you clip your lanyards to a metal rope along the entire length of the wall, and use a lot of rungs. In Via Corda, as in Saint Martin, there is no ladder, but the rungs are there to guide you up the vertical sections. You are connected by a rope to your guide and to the other participants (taut rope), and you make more use of the natural holds on the rock. It's wilder and more technical.

What should I bring for the day?

As the activity lasts all day, take along a small backpack with:

- Water (at least 1.5L per person).

- A picnic and energy snacks.

- A windbreaker (the weather changes quickly in the mountains).

- Spare clothes to leave in the car for the return trip.
